Mary Giehl: Shadows of Children

child working on art piece Giehl working with children

Shadows of Children by Mary Giehl and children she worked with in schools, residential facilities and homeless shelters in Wilmington, Delaware. Giehl is a Syracuse, NY, -based sculptor and intensive-care pediatric nurse. She immersed the students in discussion about violence, ranging from fights that occur during recess to recent events like the death of rapper Tupac Shakur, then led them in a variety of art-making activities, such as photographing and tracing each other in poses reflecting violence. The completed work, along with her own graphite drawings, were exhibited and discussed at the Delaware Center for the Contemporary Arts and at a shopping mall, where the public was invited to write messages to the children about their thoughts, hopes and concerns about violence.
