Roadside Theater

Resource List

Notes by Michael Fields: Roadside Theater has comprehensive and extensive resources. They have been meticulous in the documentation of their work and methodology. Documentation is particular focus of the group at this present time.

All of the list resources are available and accessible in the Roadside Theater office. In addition, books and CDs can be obtained through a variety of publishing outlets.

I would also identify three extremely valuable components of the resources of this company as related to this project.

  1. The most effective methodologies and practices that this company has developed and used are documented in a very accessible and useable pamphlet form. This includes story-circle methodology, community-residency practices, how to set up a rural/community tour, and a comprehensive press packet and promotional schedule for community-based sponsors to use to most effectively get out the "whole" audience. I think this is unusual and enormously valuable in the grassroots theater field.

  2. The residency goal sheet effectively tracks and documents the work of this company through the past years of residency work from conception to intention, practice, follow-up and evaluation. If I were starting a company in this model or seeking to work in this manner, this history would be where I would start, as it captures the "living" work of the company and compares and contrasts method with real practice. One can also follow the evolution of the work through these often simple and revealing reports.

  3. Roadside has an extensive library of video and music. Because they are a part of Appalshop, they also have access to an extraordinary collection of film and tape that sets a very important context for the work they do. Some of this video is pure rehearsal documentation. For those seeking to learn how work is developed, this would be essential viewing.
