About Performing Communities

Cornerstone Theater Company

Introductory note

Audiotaping was not always appropriate during my fieldwork with Cornerstone: Company meetings, initial contacts with prospective community partners, informal chats before and after shows, etc. These were not conversations I was willing to record, but the substance of those will be included in the "Reflections" section.

In all the Cornerstone material, note that the word "ensemble" refers to the ongoing core of artists that engage with community members in the community projects. However, the ensemble also creates "ensemble projects," which are not community-based projects.

—Ferdinand Lewis
