Iega and Joe Arrive
Richard Geer - Franklin County, Georgia

5/26/2008

Joe and Iega both arrived Sunday. Joe went immediately to work on the mainstage house facad. Tonight, Memorial Day night we had a delicious and rather healthy potluck dinner and then did three numbers from the show. After a warmup, a little minute long piece "Medicine Show," centering around young Stephen McCluskey, grandson of our composer. Iega helped him find his inner Elvis, make a couple of good hip gyrations, and triple the excitement of this boy at the moment of becoming a man.

Then we launched into a major number, "Hard Times." We spent more than our allotted time and did a great job. Iega stood on the north platform and danced at the people. They danced it back at him with more energy than they knew they had.

Then we dumped a wheelbarrow of dirt on the road and went into "Bump in the Road," the end of act one all stops out number. It was thrilling. I took a ton of good pictures, and maybe I can send one to you with this blog. It's such a pain to go into town and sit outside an office and steal Wi-Fi so I can send it.

I watched the people loving Iega and who they were working under the inspiration of Iega. I've been watching him make magic for over a decade. I believe he is the best choreographer in the country, and no one has ever contradicted me. The cast worked with full intensity from 6 to 10. Wow. They loved it.

Steve called me today to tell me that the cast members who are committed are losing patience with the actors who are not committed. The former mostly white, the latter, black.
