I am new to this forum but wanted to post and let anyone who may be local to NYC know about a community art project that I am helping to organize at the NY Healthy Birth Fair.
The community art project will be combined with an actual construction...making it a hybrid of installation art and community art project playing up the participatory aspects. The construction would be a 14'X14' representaion of a uterus that people would enter to view the art made by people at the event throughout the day.
There will be aspects within (representative placenta, umbilical cord, etc) that will invite viewers/participants to play with/interact with their environment as well as view the art that would be progressively made/added throughout the day to the interior
walls. The concept behind the installation of the uterus is to engage people with the fact that birth is not just a women's/baby's/family's issue but rather a human/social issue as
every one of us was birthed and lived this experience.
On the community art-making end here is the basic intention:
This community art project is intended to become a visualization of the community's interwoven birth experiences/impressions. In doing so it should evoke a wide range of what birthing a child feels/looks/sounds like and the lasting impressions that remain with people shaping our future culture of birth.
Please join in and add your voice to the NYC birth-community by making a piece of birth art to be added to our project.
Have you given birth, attended a birth, heard about a birth , been born? Please draw on any birth related experience you have and make a piece of birth art depicting what birth evokes for you.
This is all being organized/taken care of by a fellow-artist and myself. We will both be present throughout the day helping to evolve the project. This is my first large undertaking in a public forum and I guess I just wanted to share it with some folks that would understand...if you have any suggestions or advice please feel free to share. The fair is this saturday (July 21st) from 11am-7pm on the south side of Union Square.
