View Full Version : Why does my art look different then yours?

So,
to make a long story short. I now work in a school teaching art and I'm having a little trouble with the fact that the art I make with my kids looks different then the stuff that the classroom teachers are doing with them.

Someone might say. "Why is Ms. Evonne here? I mean the stuff we do with the kids is so much cleaner and put together".

It's the first year they have an art teacher and I think I need some supporting text about how important it is for someones art to be their own and for a teacher to not put their hands on it and to do projects that the kids can cut the paper, draw the lines, etc.

Mine looks different then theirs.
It also make me frustrated that they are not letting the kids "touch the projects more".

I'm afraid that the kids ages 4-7 are going to so say, Ms. Evonne I can't do it because it doesn't look good".

What am I supposed to say? I would love to say:
Yours looks great! You did it all by yourself and I can see that. In every part of it. I can see you tryed and I can see it is all You!

Help if you can.
I'm not used to be in this situation.

Peace,
Laura

Laura, Bill Cleveland has an essay on this site called "Common Sense and Common Ground" that talks about some of the challenges artists face when they work in institutions and strategies to consider. You can find it at http://www.communityarts.net/readingroom/archivefiles/2001/09/common_sense_an.php
