Community Programs Coordinator
Detroit-based Walk & Squawk Performance Project has created the new position of Community Programs Coordinator to support and develop an expanding community engagement and education program. This position involves working with artists, neighbors, and partner organizations; creating and managing cross-disciplinary arts and community events in conjunction with theatre productions; establishing new relationships with community and education organizations; exploring creative, grass roots marketing strategies; and managing the organization’s community database.
An arts background is useful but not required. Experience in community organizing, social activism, intergenerational work, education, marketing and/or event/project management is equally appropriate. Candidate must have good communication and writing skills, be able to work independently, be willing to think creatively and non-traditionally, and able to manage multiple projects and events. Computer fluency in standard office applications and internet use is essential (this position includes learning to manage web logs that coordinate input from project participants in multiple locations, using an intuitive online interface).
This is a part-time position – three days per week plus attendance at evening and weekend meetings and events as needed. Occasional travel will be required, including at least one overseas trip in 2005. Flexibility is essential. Salary range: $18,000-$22,000 plus health insurance. Walk & Squawk is an equal opportunity employer.
Please send a letter detailing your interests and experience, with a resume and a minimum of three references to Walk & Squawk’s Artistic Directors via email: info@walksquawk.org or fax to: 206.309.5200

Walk & Squawk produces performances and workshops which encourage new ways for artists and audiences to create, define and experience theatre. Our theatre is about transformation - of people, objects and ideas. It's about play. And it's about the belief that live performance creates community. Walk & Squawk creates physical and visual performance emphasizing imagination, collaborative development and ensemble work, integrating movement, images, spoken text and music.
We are shifting from creating annual projects to multi-year, multi-partner development processes that explore the same idea from different perspectives, through the creation of parallel, cross-disciplinary works within communities. This approach uses a core theatre production as a catalyst to community dialogue through other performance, visual, humanities and civic conversation events during the development process. Workshops, open rehearsals, dialogue, cross-disciplinary outreach and community-created performances have been central to our activities. We’re interested in digging deeper into the intersections of performance and community interaction – and the Community Programs Coordinator will be responsible for managing the programs and activities that emerge from this exploration.
