POSITION INFORMATION
Responsible for coordinating community arts programs to include development, design, budget management, implementation, evaluation, analysis, and program leadership (including direct, hands-on program facilitation with participants) of community expressive arts programs that serve a diverse community in a variety of settings. Duties also include the recruitment, coordination, oversight and training of staff, volunteers and interns. The spectrum of programs range from classes for leisure and skill development, to summer camp for youth, to specialized programs that use the arts to help build assets within our participants, and to provide preventive and intervenient programming for at-risk populations. The communities served are diverse in age, culture, socio-economics language and abiliities.

The position requires the ability ro apply a variety of expressive arts media/modalities, with an emphasis on drama, music, and movement, in the design of community-based arts programs for all ages. The employee must have good organizational skills and strong interpersonal/commuication skills in order to interface effectively with a diverse community.

The work involves a high level of collaboration with other program leaders within the agency: i.e., Neighborhood Recreation Areas, Bilingual Outreach, Office for Teens, Therapeutic Recreation, and the Senior Adult Office. This position in the Recreation Division, is part of a team of recreational art program staff and requires the ability to work well in both team situations and in a self-directed manner.

Please note: This position does not include the application of expressive arts therapy in a clinical setting for clinical or therapeutic purposes.
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
Minimum: Bachelor’s degree in expressive arts or related field, plus two years experience in expressive arts programs in a community-based setting.

Substitution: Additional qualifying experience may substitute for the education requirement on a year for year basis. A closely related Master’s degree may be substituted for one year of the experience requirement.

Desirable: Preference may be given to candidates with one or more of the following:

a) a certificate in expressive arts therapy from an institute or school recognized by the International Expressive Arts Therapy Association; and/or

b) experience applying a variety of art modalities for self-expression and growth in a variety of community settings.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
The applicant must possess, or obtain by the time of appointment, a valid motor vehicle operator’s license from the applicant’s place of residence or the applicant must have the ability and willingness to use alternative methods of transportation to perform assigned duties and responsibilities at locations other than the primary worksite. If the applicant possesses or acquires a license, the applicant must authorize Arlington County to obtain, or the applicant must provide, a copy of the applicant’s official state/district driving record. Any offer of employment may be contingent upon a favorable review of the applicant’s driving record.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
This is a 40 hours per week position. The schedule is flexible and can vary daily dependent on the location and services to be provided. Weekend (primarily Saturday) and evening work is required.

This position will operate from the Fairlington Art Studios, 3308 S. Stafford St., however, services will be provided throughout the County at Parks and Recreation and other agency locations.

The entry salary range for this position is $40,254 - $47,195.
