BUILDING COMMUNITY THROUGH THE ARTS
URBAN BUSH WOMEN SUMMER INSTITUTE
JULY 16-25, 2004
*
Urban Bush Women is a Brooklyn-based performance ensemble that engages a diverse audience by producing bold and life-affirming dance theater based on women’s experiences, African American history and cultural influences of the African Diaspora.* Urban Bush Women undertakes community engagement work (locally and nationally) as a way of building audiences, encouraging and nurturing individual leadership skills, and facilitating the use of art as a catalyst for social change.
*
Founded in 1984 by Jawole Willa Jo Zollar, Urban Bush Women was one of a few pioneering* dance companies that began in the 1980’s to go outside the theater space to directly engage community members in dialogue and performance.* Urban Bush Women’s Summer Institute was founded in 1997 in partnership with Florida State University, Tallahassee.* Subtitled “A New Dancer For A New Society”, the Institute trained more than 150 artists/activists over three years in UBW’s community engagement techniques.* 2004 marks the celebration of UBW’s 20th Anniversary season, and the launch of the Summer Institute in Brooklyn.
*
The Institute schedule is rigorous and designed to provide an immersion in dance and necessary dialogue among artists, educators and cultural leaders.* Classes in Zollar Technique are held daily.* Institute participants also attend movement workshops, dialogue training sessions and, this year will* partner with local artists and cultural groups to create a work around the theme of voter education, registration, and voter turnout.
The Brooklyn Institute is intended to provide a home base for the work already done by Zollar and Urban Bush Women on the road in Philadelphia, New Orleans, Sarasota, Tallahassee, Miami, New Haven and, most recently, Flint, Michigan.*
*
*As an organization, Urban Bush Women believes in the active unity of theory and practice.* The Institute has five goals:
*
©!=To engage participants in UBW’s aesthetic ideology for creating community-based projects and to assist them in developing their own philosophy towards community art-making;
***********************
©!=To provide solid training in Zollar technique;
*
©!=To foster participants’ recognition of the cultural and historical landscape in which they live;
*
©!=To illustrate how research and performance can respond to community life; and
*
©!=To encourage participants to return home and use this information to work toward community empowerment.**
*
*
*
The Institute will be directed by Jawole Willa Jo Zollar (Founding Artistic Director, Urban Bush Women). Born and raised in Kansas City, Missouri, Jawole Willa Jo Zollar trained with Joseph Stevenson, a student of the legendary Katherine Dunham.
