Making Art in Community II

MA in Community Arts (MACA)

Winter/Spring 2006

Goals

MACA students will develop artwork that is an outgrowth of their experience working with community, projects developed for Two Way Street and other influences of their choosing. These developments will become the basis for a thesis to be presented at the end of the summer session.

Jan 17 INSTALLATION OF TWO WAY STREET EXHIBITION
Jan 24 Art 21 DVD – PBS Artists speaking about their working processes.What is a thesis? Discussion focused on the many facets of community art context and its relationship to thesis presentation (where, how and when).
Jan 31 Evaluation of individual works in the gallery and how they relate to thesis development. Seven students will present.
Feb 2 TWO WAY STREET OPENS – CROSSING THE BLVD
Feb 7 Evaluation of individual works in the gallery and how they relate to thesis development. Seven students will present.
Feb 14 Visiting Artist
Feb 21 Each student makes an in-depth presentation to the class that explores ideas and images of one individual who influences their conceptual and technical development.   (7 students)
Feb 28 Continue presentations (6 students)
Mar 7 Evaluation of Two Way Street – Crossing the BLVD exhibits installation and programs invite MACA faculty and George Ciscle
Mar 13 TWO WAY STREET DE-INSTALLATION – CROSSING THE BLVD
Mar 14 SPRING BREAK
Mar 21 THESIS PROPOSAL DUE _ Progress Discussions (7 students)
with Fletcher and Jann, invite George Ciscle  and MACA Faculty Proposals include a concept, location considerations, timeline
Mar 28 THESIS PROPOSAL DUE _Progress Discussions  (6 students) with Fletcher and Jann, invite George Ciscle  and MACA Faculty. Proposals include a concept, location considerations, timeline.
Apr 4 Visting Artist
Apr 11 Kurasawa Film exploring context and presentation
Apr 18 Slide presentations by instructor that presents artists developing working relationships with community
Apr 25 Thesis Committee Meetings - Take into consideration comments from proposal presentations, evaluation of work in Two Way Street, and “influence presentations.”
May 2 FINAL CRITIQUE
Students present revised thesis (include timeline – accomplished tasks and future ones, budget/costs, administrative procedures, technical and installation details, projected PR) Take into comments from proposal presentations, evaluation of work in Two Way Street, and “influence presentations.” Other topics for discussion should.
May 9 FINAL CRITIQUE
Students present revised thesis (include budget/costs administrative procedures, technical and installation details)

NOTES

(1) There is no such thing as a dumb or stupid question!
(2) You must be prepared to participate along with the other members of the class EVEN WHEN YOU RETURN TO CLASS AFTER A WEEK’S ABSENCE.
(3) Critiques are mandatory and not excusable absences, unless you have a letter from the Dean of Students and a doctor.
(4) Your grade will reflect your growth in relationship to yourself, your peers in the class, and other students we have experienced in past classes.
