Wanted: Your insights on the recession
Linda Frye Burnham / 03:20 PM

Forwarded from Simon Fraser U. Centre for Policy Studies on Culture and Communities, Vancouver:

June 19, 2009

Newsflash: CPCC looking for news about impact of recession on cultural workers! What is happening in your community?

Will the recession kill the “creative economy movement” or provide the right releasing touch? Has your community seen the arts culture and heritage sector fall off of the political agenda or move to the forefront? Economic recovery will need the resourcefulness of new creativity, but never have statistics been less insightful about what is happening on the ground.

The Canadian Human Resource Council has commissioned the Conference Board of Canada to review the current situation of cultural labour in Canada over the next year, and Roger Martin and Richard Florida have released a major study in Ontario calling for a human resource strategy in stimulative spending.

To track these and other policy developments, the CPCC has been developing a program of research working critically within the creative economy paradigm over the past year, studying the changing nature of cultural work in communities across Canada. Effective June 15, the CPCC is one of 10 consortia asked to propose a Major Collaborative Research Initiative to the Social Science and Humanities Research Council. The final date for the submission is the end of the summer. We would welcome your insight.

In recessionary times, governments need insights and practical tools to contribute to individuals’ well-being, cultural expression and sustainable communities.

Details will be posted on www.cultureandcommunities.ca

How can you help? Let us know what you see is the positive or negative effect of the recession on your community’s arts cultural and heritage workers. Nominate slow growth or high growth communities for the study. Comment on types of research you support or oppose. Bring excellent sources/ideas/people to our attention.
