« La dulce vida | Main | Rules to blog by » February 12, 2008 Haystack making community with Deer IsleLinda Frye Burnham / 11:23 AM Haystack Mountain School of Crafts, on the edge of the Atlantic on Deer Isle, Maine, recently completed a interesting project in its new Center for Community Programs in the heart of Deer Isle village. Artist Sonya Clark conducted two half-day workshops there with 30 Deer Isle residents, helping them make "beaded prayers" inspired by African amulet traditions. The workshops accompanied Clark's traveling exhibition, "Beaded Blessings," comprising 4,000 amulets made by the communities the show has visited. The Deer Isle participants each made two amulets: one to take home and one to join the exhibition. There's a lovely story about this -- and Haystack's ongoing relationship with its community -- in the Bangor Daily News: "New Haystack facility expands year-round offerings" CommentsPost a comment Thanks for signing in, .
