June 23, 2006 Educating for Sustainability in Devon
Artists interested in hybrid thinking and inquiry might consider upcoming courses at Schumacher College at Dartington Hall in Devon, England,
which calls itself "an international centre educating and inspiring for sustainability." Extremely transdiciplinary, the college is named for E.F. Schumacher ("Small Is Beautiful)," who emphasized the connections among all things. Progam director is Satish Kumar, Jain monk and editor of "Resurgence" magazine. The college invites as guest teachers those working holistically at the leading edges of science, economics, philosophy and art. Course participants are residents who share in cooking, housekeeping and gardening. Upcoming in September, "Art in Place: Linking Art to Ecology," taught by Peter London (author, "Drawing Closer to Art"), Antony Gormley (sculptor, The Angel of the North) and Devon artist Peter Randall-Page.
