New Village Press has just published the "Beginners' Guide to Community-Based Art" by Mat Schwarzman, Keith Knight and others. the "Guide" is a popular-education book designed as a "comics-illustrated nonfiction travelogue that visits real artists at work revitalizing communities across the United States." The book profiles ten inspiring ptograms through graphic stories with strong messages. Author Schwarzman, director of the Crossroads Project in New Orleans,La., is depicted by cartoonist Knight as the travel guide for stops in Philadelphia, Zuni Pueblo, San Francisco, Minneapolis and more. Crossroads will raise funds around the country to provide community-based arts activities for New Orleans public-school students, and New Village will donate half the profits from "Guide" sales to the effort.
